Reading slowly, on purpose

From sixty books a year to fifteen, and why I remember all fifteen.

Reading slowly, on purpose

I used to read like a hungry person eats: fast, and without tasting. Sixty books a year, a list on my phone, a small glow of pride every time I added one. Then I realised I could not remember anything about most of them. So I started reading slowly, on purpose. This year I will finish about fifteen books, and I will remember all of them.

What slow reading is

It is not reading fewer pages per hour. It is reading with a pencil in your hand, stopping when something is interesting, rereading the passages you like, and closing the book when your attention wanders instead of pushing on.

A pencil in the margin: a line, a question mark, a word.
